Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti dies at 71 (Newsday)

Luciano Pavarotti, the sun-voiced opera singer who played the role of global supertenor with gusto for three decades, died early Thursday at 71. His death leaves the world without a towering Italian tenor for the first time in the modern history of opera.
